We all know that laziness is a state of mind, and everybody experiences it. At times, we may feel overburdened and tend to be a bit lazy for a while, but it can be drastic if this becomes a perpetual habit, as it prevents us from completing important tasks or hinders our studies. This is one habit which should be controlled at the earliest so that you can live your life to the fullest, and enjoy all your activities. The following 5 steps could help you overcome laziness encountered while studying.

1. One step at a time

Just as you cannot watch the entire movie in a minute, read a novel in few seconds, or eat your entire meal at one go, you have to plan how you will accomplish your task, step-by-step.

2. Make a ‘to-do’ list

Especially when you have to submit papers in your high school/college or prepare for exams, you must be very clear as to which task has to be finished first. With many distractions around, you could make a ‘to-do’ list and keep it handy, where you can see it at all times, to remind you what sequence you have to follow.

3. Put aside distractions, seek inspiration

If it’s TV or computer games or internet or any upcoming social event distracting you, push it out of your mind completely by visualizing the benefits of successfully finishing your studies or exams. You could decide about a special dinner or make a deal with your parents about how they’ll reward you once you’ve finished what you set out to do. This should give you the inspiration to get started and concentrate on your studies!

4. Do the easy things first

The biggest hurdle to conquer is in getting started. Make it easy for yourself. Attempt the easier things first. Once you have successfully completed the easy tasks, you’ll be more confident in taking up the difficult ones.

5. Reward yourself

As you go about your studies or try to finish an important assignment in a timely manner, you can always take a short break to enjoy a piece of cake, have a fruit salad or the snack you relish, when you are half-way through. Once you are done with your studies or exams, you can decide about your main reward– a dress you wanted to buy, a holiday promised by your parents, or a special date.

6. Using social pressure

This can make or mar. There are students who come out as toppers when faced with social pressure; there are others who may still give up. Some students prefer to use the internet and find the right groups to help them.

7. Parents can help

For younger children to overcome laziness and complete their homework, and take interest in their studies, parents have to watch out for signs of boredom. If necessary, supervise your child as he/she does the homework, and be ready to help them with answers. If nothing seems to work, you can talk with your child’s teacher, the principal and the school psychologist to work out ways to get your child interested in studies. But remember to give your child your unconditional love and support at all times; you’ll end up teaching your child values that will stay with him/her throughout his/her life.
