We caught up with personal trainer Jim on one of his usual jogs around the park and asked him, “How do you motivate yourself, Jim?” Smiling, Jim talked about some of the top 5 things that he made his clients do on a daily basis when they ran out of answers to the question of how to motivate yourself.

1. Tell yourself that you are stronger person everyday

“One of the best things to do on a daily basis to motivate yourself is to tell yourself that you are a stronger person everyday. The best time to do this is in the morning when you wake up and look in the mirror”, said Jim. We understand this tip on how to motivate yourself because it is all about reaffirming to your own self and building self-confidence from within. Your mental strength will go a long way in motivating yourself.

2. Plan daily

The best way to motivate yourself is to plan your day before you start it. It can be as simple as thinking about what you are going to do at work while you commute to work, or simply pondering about the things that you are planning to do in the day while you enjoy your morning coffee. “I’ve noticed that all my clients who know how to motivate themselves are great planners. They know what they are going to be doing in an hour’s time, and they really know how to get things done”, said Jim.

3. Take action and get things done

It is surprising how your attitude of “getting things done” can motivate yourself. “I pride myself in doing what I say I will do. The feeling I get after finishing the work that I promised I’d do, is just unbeatable. It motivates me to go further”, said Jim. Takes Jim’s advice on how to motivate yourself and start doing things, rather than just talking about them. It can be as simple as running errands to the shops or going to the bank. Once you decide or say that you’ll do something, just do it.

4. Talk to a successful role model everyday

Confused? Don’t be, because what we are about to tell you on how to motivate yourself is really not rocket science. In all our lives, we have certain people whom we look up to, to draw inspiration and motivation, don’t we? It can be your manager, your mom, your dad, your friend or your mentor. The easiest way to motivate yourself is to have a chat with your role model about how your day went and how you dealt with things. They can be a great source of motivation and much needed advice in your life.

5. Pat yourself on the back daily when you do a good job

It doesn’t matter whether you have a job, run a business or are a homemaker. We all need to make decisions in our lives on a daily basis. “Self-appreciation is a great tool for learning how to motivate yourself. When you pat yourself on the back for a good decision in the day, you are simply reaffirming and re-analyzing what you did right. This feeling infuses mental strength and the confidence of a rock star”, said Jim. We like Jim’s tip on how to motivate yourself but we have our own thoughts that you must know. Just make sure that you don’t over-indulge in self-appreciation because that may sometimes lead to over confidence.
