Top 5 Team Building Exercises

Team building exercises have become a need in various organizations. These exercises are done for reasons such as improving communication, boosting morale, motivating employees , getting to know each other better etc. They are effective and bring in efficiency to any form of business. Any organization’s success is largely related to good teamwork and harmony. Following are a few major team building exercises:

I. Two truths and one lie

Time required: 15-30 minutes
Procedure:
1. Every one writes down two truths and one lie about them on different pieces of paper.

2. 10-15 minutes of open discussion.

3. Try convincing the other team members that your lie is actually a truth while also trying to figure out other people’s lies by asking them questions.

4. No one should disclose their truths or lies to anyone.

5. After the discussion, everyone reads out their three statements.

6. The group votes the statement they think is false.
Points to be awarded for every correct guess and for making others believe that that your lie is actually true.

Benefits:
Improves communication skills and people get to know each other better.

II. The classic egg drop

Time required: 2 hours
Procedure:
1. The team should be sub-divided into 2 teams.

2. Each team has to build an egg package that can withstand an eight feet drop.

3. Teams should be provided with the various material they need to build that egg packaging.

4. After the egg package has been built, each team must make a 30 second commercial as to why their egg packaging is unique and what is its functioning.

5. After the commercial has been presented, the egg packaging the teams made will be tested if it works really.

Benefits:
This exercise improves team coordination as it brings them together with a common goal.

III. The paper tower

Time required: 5 minutes
Procedure:
1. Each team is given a single sheet of paper.

2. Each team is required to make a paper tower only out of the sheet of paper they are given.

3. The team with the tallest, stable tower wins.

4. After this, a discussion should be held discussing the best way to make the tower and how it could have been made in a better way.

Benefits:
Teaches the importance of planning, timing, thinking and obviously, team coordination.

IV. Coin Logo

Time required : 5 – 10 minutes
Procedure :
1. Everyone must take out all the coins in their wallets or pockets and place them on a table.

2. Then every person must create their own personal logo with the help of the coins in not more than 1 minute.

3. Other items such as pens, notebooks etc may also be used in the creation of the logo.

4 . If its a large group , people may be divided into groups of 3-6 members and each group can create a logo that best describes their team.

5. Each individual participant or the group will then explain what made them make their logo and what it signifies.

Benefit : Promotes mutual awareness and team spirit.

V. Scavenger Hunt

Time required: 25-30 minutes
Procedure:
1. Pick out around 20 – 30 items from in and around the workplace.

2. Inform all the individuals in the organization that a scavenger hunt is going to take place.

3. Make teams of 3-6 members and give them specified time to look for the items.

Benefit: Creates a rapport between the members and increases their knowledge about the campus of the organization.
