Ways to Get Out of a Routine

When you keep on doing the same thing over and over again without realizing that every time something or the other is different, you are not living, you are simply existing. It is vital that you experience your life instead of just letting it pass by you until suddenly realize that there is a lot that you could have done but you didn’t because you were stuck in a routine. Here are 5 ways to get out of a routine.

1. Force upon yourself a vacation:

Sad as it may sound, the world will keep on spinning even if you take a couple of days off work. Go out, have fun, forget your usual worries and discover a new side to yourself. Force yourself to take a vacation – that is the easiest way to get out of a routine and gain a fresh perspective.

2. Do something different every day:

It could be as simple as taking a different way to work, using the stairs, helping someone in need, or as big as signing up for a tap dance class. Make time to do one new thing everyday and before you know it, you are out of your usual routine.

3. Take out 5 minutes for introspection:

Before you go to sleep, spend just 5 minutes thinking about your day, and your life in general. Think about what you want to do, and if you are doing the same things over and over without realizing the same.

4. Share your dreams with yourself:

You need to pen down all of your hopes and dreams in some form or the other. Doing this establishes them concretely, and when it’s in your face, you get all the answers about how to go about it. More importantly, you will break your routine and start working to make those dreams come true!

5. Take a ‘lazy day’ once in a while:

Once every month, take a day off and make it your lazy day – a day when you do nothing at all. Do not even worry about impending work. Just eat, drink, pray, and love. You will get a sense of what is really important in life, and what is just redundant.
To quote Barney Stinson of How I Met Your Mother, “rut is the first syllable of routine”
